This license allows you to drive cars, SUVs, light trucks, and other vehicles with two axles and a net weight of under 4,500 kg. With a Class 5 license, you can also legally drive motor homes, small utility vehicles, and certain three-wheeled vehicles. Obtaining a Class 5 license is a key step toward gaining independence on the road and is essential for anyone wanting to drive privately or professionally in Quebec.
How to Get a Class 5 License at Unity Driving School
✅ 1. Meet the Age Requirements
- You must be at least 16 years old to apply for a Class 5 license.
- If you’re under 18 years old, you’ll need written consent from a parent or legal guardian.
✅ 2. Obtain a Learner’s License
- Registering for a driving course.
- Completing the SAAQ theoretical exam.
✅ 3. Complete a Driving Course
- 24 hours of theory – Divided into 12 modules (2 hours each).
- 15 hours of practical road training – Includes 55-minute driving sessions with a certified instructor.
✅ 4. Pass the SAAQ Exams
- Theoretical Exam – Covers road signs, traffic laws, and safe driving practices.
- Practical Exam – Demonstrates your driving skills on the road.

How to Get a Class 5 License?

- 24 hours of theory – Divided into 12 modules (2 hours each).
- 15 hours of practical road training – Includes 55-minute driving sessions with a certified instructor.
✅ 4. Pass the SAAQ Exams
- SAAQ knowledge test – A separate test administered by the SAAQ after you have held a valid learner’s licence for at least 10 months.
- SAAQ road test – Requires at least 12 months with a learner’s licence, successful completion of the driving course, and a pass on the SAAQ knowledge test.

- Sharing the road – Develop the skills to drive safely alongside other road users, including cyclists, pedestrians, and other vehicles.
- The dangers of alcohol and drugs – Learn how impaired driving affects your ability to react and make decisions, and the importance of staying sober behind the wheel.
Phase 4
Enhancing Skills for Safe and Responsible Driving
- The effects of fatigue on driving – Learn how tiredness impacts reaction time, decision-making, and overall safety on the road.
- Eco-driving – Discover techniques for driving that are not only safe and economical but also environmentally friendly, helping reduce fuel consumption and emissions.
The SAAQ knowledge test is taken at the SAAQ after you have held a valid learner’s licence for at least 10 months. It is separate from the Phase 1 test (Module 5) administered by your driving school before you obtain your learner’s licence.
Theoretical training can be completed either with a trainer in class or continued online at Unity Driving School. However, for a complete understanding of the material, we recommend practicing through self-training and exercises from the modules covered in class.
